Technical SEO Checklist for Business Websites

You can write the best content in your industry, but if Google cannot crawl and index your website properly, it will not rank. Technical SEO is the foundation. Use this checklist to find and fix the most common problems on business websites.

1. Set up Google Search Console

  • Verify your domain in Google Search Console.
  • Submit your XML sitemap.
  • Check the Pages report for pages that are not indexed and why.

2. Make sure important pages are indexable

  • No accidental "noindex" tags on key pages
  • robots.txt is not blocking important sections
  • Each page has a single, clear canonical URL
  • No duplicate versions of the site (http and https, www and non-www) competing with each other

3. Give every page its own URL

Each service and blog article should live at its own clean URL, such as /blog/how-to-rank-on-google/. Content that only appears after clicking a button or a "#" link is often not indexed as a separate page.

4. Use HTTPS everywhere

Install an SSL certificate and redirect all http traffic to https. Browsers warn visitors about insecure pages, and HTTPS is a basic trust signal.

5. Speed up your site

  • Compress images and use modern formats like WebP
  • Lazy-load images and videos below the fold
  • Limit heavy scripts and unused plugins
  • Use good hosting and a CDN
  • Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights

6. Be mobile-first

Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Text should be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap, and nothing should overflow the screen.

7. Get your on-page basics right

  • A unique title tag (around 50–60 characters) on every page
  • A helpful meta description (around 150–160 characters)
  • One clear H1 per page, with logical H2 and H3 headings
  • Descriptive alt text on images

8. Add structured data

Schema markup helps Google understand your content. Useful types for businesses include Organization, LocalBusiness, Article for blog posts and FAQPage for question-and-answer sections.

9. Build strong internal links

Link blog articles to related service pages and to each other. This helps Google discover pages and understand which ones matter most, and it guides readers to the next step.

10. Fix broken links and redirects

Find 404 errors and redirect old URLs to the most relevant new page. Avoid chains of multiple redirects.

11. Monitor monthly

Each month, review Search Console for new indexing issues, Core Web Vitals and changes in clicks and impressions. Small problems are easiest to fix early.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring negative keywords and search term reports
  • Sending paid traffic to the homepage instead of a focused landing page
  • Stopping campaigns before they have enough data
  • Letting the agency own your ad accounts

Quick checklist before you start

  • A follow-up process for every enquiry
  • Conversion tracking tested end to end
  • Landing page that matches the offer
  • Weekly review of results and search terms
  • Accounts and data in your business name

Key takeaway

Indexing, speed, mobile, HTTPS, structured data and internal links: the technical SEO checks every business website should pass. Start with one clear goal, measure results from day one and keep accounts and data in your own name, so you stay in control whatever partner you work with.
